A mother, a daughter, a murder.

This is a play that on the surface appears to be about murder and the relationships between a mother and a daughter. However it has much more to it - it is a play about the justice system, matriarchy, patriarchy, power and, most of all, love.

Josie visits her mother Fay in prison, Fay is serving life for murder. This is the first time Fay has seen her mother since she started her prison sentence fifteen years ago. The play looks at these relationships and personalities have been affected not just by the murder but by the incarceration of Fay. Rona Munro writing is alluring and provoking, she focusing on characters and emotions and this play looks particularly at women in the justice system.

There are over 5,000 prisoners serving life in the UK today. Of those 5,000 only 165 are women. So what drives a woman to murder? Are we all capable of murder under the right (or wrong) circumstances? And what does imprisonment achieve?

If you enjoy theatre that touches you and makes you ask questions about your life and society, then this is certainly an evening well spent.

We present two plays in repertory, both set in prison – claustrophobic and contained, the ideal location for worlds to collide and sparks to fly - see also Kiss of the Spider Woman.
