Jane Eyre Review

NINE actors, some playing multiple roles, deliver a gripping version of this Charlotte Bronte classic novel which explores the relationship between modest governess Jane Eyre and Edward Rochester, master of Thornfield Hall.

Adapted by Polly Teale, it suggests that Rochester's first wife, Bertha Mason, a mad woman secretly locked in an attic room and cared for by a nurse, is actually a manifestation of Jane's passionate inner self.

The idea requires Paula Wall (Bertha) to be on stage for the entire show, and she gives a wonderful performance in a difficult role, switching moods from placid and loving to violent and frightening.

Making her acting debut in the theatre's Ron Barber studio, Stourbridge drama student Daisy Barrett-Nash is excellent as Jane, Jeremy Wyatt is a convincing Rochester, while Daniel Wilby sparkles as a lord, a clergyman, and even Rochester's pet dog, Pilot. Outstanding contributions, too, from Peter M. Smith in a trio of parts, including Rochester's horse, and Alice Winstanley (Adele/Abigail).

Audience Comments

The theatre was comfortable and the staff were all very friendly.  I really enjoyed the play - it is very well adapted from the novel and I thought the actors were extremely versatile being able to play so many different roles.  the portrayal of Rochester was very strong, successfully capturing the complex character.
Being from a musical family I particularly enjoyed the singing!  And the animal characters worked really well too.  And it was very clever having Bertha on the stage at all times and drawing parallels between the struggles she and Jane endured in their lives.

Well done to the cast and crew of 'Jane Eyre' at the Crescent Theatre on an excellent achievement - imaginative stagecraft and compelling performances. After seeing it, it leaves you with a sense of constant movement. Do go and see for yourself: it's on until 12 May.

Just been to see Jane Eyre. This is an excellent production. Perfectly cast, very strong performances from every cast member and expertly and cleverly directed. Well done to cast and crew. Thank you for an evening of high quality entertainment.

The theatre looks very professional and the staff very welcoming. There was a good atmosphere and the Studio looked amazing as we walked in. The portrayal of Bertha by Paula Wall was outstanding. The cast as a whole were very strong and the animals were wonderfully done.

Yet again, another excellent production at The Crescent. All members of the cast were excellent and so versatile in playing different characters. Brilliant direction and great atmosphere in the very intimate studio theatre. The Rochester charater particularly gave a truly believable, riverting performance and Adele was quite delightful! The animals were brilliantly portrayed and the Jamaica scene very well choreographed.

It was my first visit to the theatre but would definately return. Very welcoming!
I was blown away by the acting of all the cast, but Jane Eyre herself was out standing!! She made me believe every single word spoken...and i felt every emotion with her. AMAZING ACTING!!
