Jane Eyre Review NINE actors, some playing multiple roles, deliver a gripping version of this Charlotte Bronte classic novel which explores the relationship between modest governess Jane Eyre and Edward Rochester, master of Thornfield Hall. Adapted by Polly Teale, it suggests that Rochester's first wife, Bertha Mason, a mad woman secretly locked in an attic room and cared for by a nurse, is actually a manifestation of Jane's passionate inner self. The idea requires Paula Wall (Bertha) to be on stage for the entire show, and she gives a wonderful performance in a difficult role, switching moods from placid and loving to violent and frightening. Making her acting debut in the theatre's Ron Barber studio, Stourbridge drama student Daisy Barrett-Nash is excellent as Jane, Jeremy Wyatt is a convincing Rochester, while Daniel Wilby sparkles as a lord, a clergyman, and even Rochester's pet dog, Pilot. Outstanding contributions, too, from Peter M. Smith in a trio of parts, including Rochester's horse, and Alice Winstanley (Adele/Abigail). PAUL MARSTON Audience CommentsThe theatre was comfortable and the staff were all very friendly. I really enjoyed the play - it is very well adapted from the novel and I thought the actors were extremely versatile being able to play so many different roles. the portrayal of Rochester was very strong, successfully capturing the complex character.

All members of the cast were excellent and so versatile in playing different characters. Brilliant direction and great atmosphere in the very intimate studio theatre. The Rochester charater particularly gave a truly believable, riverting performance and Adele was quite delightful!
