Sweeney ToddThe Demon Barber of Fleet StreetA Musical Thriller Sat 28th May – Sat 4th June 2011 at 7.30pm in The Main House Matinees: Sun 29th May & Sat 4th June at 2.45pm After Dark Fri 3rd June "There's a hole in the world Like a great black pit And the vermin of the world inhabit it And its morals aren't worth What a pig would spit And it goes by the name of London". Sweeney Todd's description of a decaying area of London from Victorian times inhabited by a variety of undesirables ruled by a bullying judge and his subservient subordinate beadle. Benjamin Barker returns to the city where he once lived with his beautiful wife before being accused by Judge Turpin of a crime he didn't commit and sent to face a life sentence incarcerated on the other side of the world. His escape and revengeful return as Sweeney Todd sets the scene for this amazing piece of musical theatre. He meets up with Mrs. Lovett who runs a pie shop in Fleet Street and they form an unholy alliance, slicing and baking their way through a London of grime, fog and depravity - with masses and masses of blood. Set in a market square in what used to be Victorian London, this production imagines a time after an horrific disaster in the past which emptied London for many, many years but is now inhabited by characters returning to the city trying to rebuild their miserable lives. A roller coaster ride of emotions with some of the most evocative music ever heard on the musical theatre stage. From the first chilling scene to the terrifying conclusion, it sets the scene and the mood...both horrific one minute and charming the next...at a stroke! This is Sondheim at his brilliantly terrifying best!
