Birmingham School of Acting Spring SeasonA DybbukDirected by Max Webster Wed 9th - Sat 12th February in The Main House A Dybbuk - (the Hebrew word for 'ghost') - is considered by many to be the greatest Yiddish drama. It recounts the story of a wealthy man's daughter who is possessed by the spirit of her dead beloved. This is a deeply wistful piece about a flawed but rich culture on the precipice of apocalyptic change, about technology posed to tear through ancient truths and the seductions of assimilation ready to devastate whatever culture is left after the slaughters of the twentieth century. Tony Kushner's adaptation of this classic tale is passionate and illuminating and serves to burnish the originals mixture of spiritual exhalation and material poverty, abstract symbolism and exotic superstition, brought funnily and furiously alive in this contemporary and provocative production. Presented by Birmingham School of Acting in association with Josef Weinberger Limited. Tickets: £7 (Concessions £5, Students £2.50) |
