Broadway and Birmingham go hand in hand across the boards this January by both putting on performances of Miller’s classic, A View From The Bridge, in the same week!! While the Broadway line-up includes the likes of Scarlett Johansson and Liev Schreiber, the Crescent has picked some of the best local actors from in and around Birmingham to perform in the theatre’s intimate Studio surroundings. This challenging classic is set to provoke emotion and defy convention. (Read some geniune audience comments below)
Set against the backdrop of Brooklyn Bridge in 1950s America, this gem from Arthur Miller takes on the psychological and social. On one level it is the story of a Brooklyn stereotype, Eddie Carbone, and his obsessive love for his niece, Catherine; it is a love that flares into frenzied jealousy when she falls for Rodolfo, one of the two illegal immigrants whom Eddie is harbouring. On a wider level, the play is about the tribal code of a whole society.
Director James Allan is enjoying a challenge with his approach to this classic play, “Some say it’s the greatest play in the English language and it’s an amazing piece to direct. Over the last 55 years it’s been performed a great deal but often with a great reverence for convention and stage direction. I wanted to approach this production very differently and was really taken with the central theme of Greek tragedy that partly inspired Miller to write the play in the first place. Our production borrows from Greek theatre in many different ways and anyone studying the play will have plenty to think and write about!”

Really excellent, thoroughly enjoyed it. Worked very well in the intimate setting. I liked the references to greek tragedy – gave it a sense of timeless quality. I missed the brooding ominous presence of the bridge that I have experienced in other productions. - Anonymous
Wow, I enjoy all the shows you do but few blow me away like that one. Truly amazing performance all round. Well done. - JM
