Caroline Keatley’s poignant and engrossing play traces four generations of women through the changing times of the twentieth century.
Brilliantly divided into short scenes, the play develops the chronology of the family effortlessly and manages to say something about how things change and how they stay the same. Ultimately it shows that mothering a daughter is the tie that bonds.
It begins when Doris Partington, born in 1900 becomes a mother in Manchester during WWII. Her daughter Margaret, marries in the 1950s and has a daughter of her own, Jackie who becomes first a hippie art student and then a sleek art dealer and not perhaps ready to be a mother…but come 1971, Rosie is born…
My Mother Said I Never Should explores women. And it explores the relationships women have with each other and their families. It also is a play about how women relate to men, and what it was, to be at different times, to be a wife, to be a mother.
Move through revelations of motherdaughter emotions of the past and the present this Spring at The Crescent Theatre.
