The Crescent Theatre tackles one of the most well-known, well-respected plays in English Literature: Hamlet.
Beset with much notoriety, through study and production, Hamlet is a masterpiece that has infinite challenges in direction and performance. The director of this production, Alan Marshall, describes his feelings about directing it: “Terrified, exhilarated, very privileged, inspired. There is so much in the play. Every time I read it and hear it I find myself thinking ‘I've never noticed that before. How could I have missed that?’
Hamlet is a blooming good yarn. I often wonder what it must have been like to be in the early audiences who didn't know the story and didn't know what was coming next. So I have tried to put in a few things that might surprise those who have seen the play many times before. I also wanted it to appeal to a younger audience so that they might see that Shakespeare is really pretty exciting.” (Read Alan's notes in full)
Peter Smith (right), who is playing Hamlet says “I feel privileged and honoured, as well as incredibly excited, tempered with mild trepidation, to be afforded the marvelous opportunity to play this most complex of human beings, along with a great sense of responsibility to be honest and fair in my portrayal of him.”
This was one of the most exciting Crescent Theatre productions of 2010.
