It’s Christmas Eve at the Helmer household. The tree is dressed, and the children are at play. With a husband newly promoted, and the burden of her past financial struggles behind her, doting wife and affectionate mother, Nora, looks forward to the perfect year ahead....
That is, until, the arrival of an unwelcome guest threatens to destroy this blissful scene, and with it, Nora’s faith in the very roles which she, like countless women of her generation, has been taught to play, and in playing, to perfect...
First premiered in Copenhagen in 1879, Henrik Ibsen’s ground-breaking tale of one woman’s awakening from the spiritual and intellectual constraints of 19th Century married life, outraged theatre-goers of the day, many of whom viewed Ibsen’s text as a direct and undiluted attack upon the central tenants of Bourgeoisie morality.
For Director Gerry Lucas, 130 years on, the play retains the power to shock, challenge and inspire audiences worldwide.
'The main reason for the play’s longevity’, says Lucas, ‘is down to the moral dilemma Nora, the central protagonist, experiences during the course of the play...and even today, Nora’s choices still divide audiences the world over’.
