L’incoronazione di Poppea
by Claudio Monteverdi
6th – 8th March 2008 at 7.00pm in The Main House
Matinee 8th at 2.00pm
Do you enjoy your opera alive with ambition, lust, betrayal, grief, vengeance, banishment, attempted murder, layers of earthy comedy and a tad of real love? Then “L’incoronazione di Poppea” is definitely for you.
Violent Nero and ambitious Poppea seduce each other, discarding his wife and her lover. Philosopher Seneca disapproves and is forced to commit suicide; Nero's wife, Ottavia, tries to have Poppea murdered and is banished; Poppea's ex-lover Ottone fails to commit the deed and also is banished. Wrong triumphs, to glorious music, and the whole is commented on by a bunch of unruly, extremely funny servants.
Monteverdi’s last opera is brought to the stage by the acclaimed Birmingham Conservatoire. A rare chance to see baroque opera at its very best.
Tickets £12 (Concessions £9 & Conservatoire Students £3.50)
