“When I kiss you, I come to life …”
“Forget me. Survive me. I’m useless to you. If I loved you, the best thing I ever did for you was to let you go.”
The story of Margeurite Gautier, the washer-woman’s daughter who became the most notorious courtesan of her day, has scandalised and fascinated theatre, film and opera audiences since Alexandre Dumas wrote La Dame Aux Camelias in 1848. Pam Gems’ version, first performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1984, reveals the cost of love and passion in a world where everyone knows their place and everything has its price.
