The house of Belflor is in an uproar.  The maid loves the steward, who himself lusts after the lady-in-waiting, who in turn adores the secretary.  It only really starts to go horribly wrong however when their mistress, the Countess of Belflor, also develops an interest in the secretary…

“When I kiss you, I come to life …”
“Forget me.  Survive me.  I’m useless to you. If I loved you, the best thing I ever did for you was to let you go.”

The story of Margeurite Gautier, the washer-woman’s daughter who became the most notorious courtesan of her day, has scandalised and fascinated theatre, film and opera audiences since Alexandre Dumas wrote La Dame Aux Camelias in 1848.  Pam Gems’ version, first performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1984, reveals the cost of love and passion in a world where everyone knows their place and everything has its price.
