standing in Rome to be with his Egyptian Queen.
A Will Of Power
This is a production that would grace any
professional stage and Andrew Cowie bestrides it as a towering, prowling, soliloquising
Antony – a man of moods, in whom fun and tenderness rub shoulders with steely
resolve. Likewise Sarah-Jane McCaffrey is a Cleopatra of fire and Mark Thompson’s
Caesar of solid, unflamboyant worth.
Norman Thackwray’s production is a
thing of pace and vigour but it finds time for a glorious drunken scene built around Bob
Carradine’s Lepidus. Brendan Stanley is a powerful Enobarbus, possibly the nearest
Shakespeare came to providing the play with a chorus, and Cherie Rowe takes Charmian from
giggling handmaid to confidante confronting regal tragedy. There is not a weak spot. It
exudes confidence and untrammelled flair. It’s excellent and it runs until Saturday.
