PRESS RELEASE

LOVE AND MARRIAGE RETURNS TO BRITAIN

David Heron’s popular romantic comedy Love and Marriage and New York City will shortly return to Great Britain for its second tour to that country in just over a year.

The production had its British premiere in the summer of 2002, when it played to packed houses and excellent reviews for a tour which included stops in Huddersfield, Birmingham, Sheffield and London. At the world famous Peggy Ashcroft Theatre in London, the show astounded local theatre observers by selling out all its engagements,- a first for a black play in that location- leading to requests for repeat performances.

Due to the overwhelming response to the first tour, British Theatre Producers KAJANS Women’s Enterprise and Association have elected to remount the show for an eight week engagement beginning in early September of this year.

The tour will begin 4th September in Birmingham at the Crescent Theatre, before moving on Northampton, London, Wycombe, Redditch, Leicester and Luton, culminating with a performance in Derby on October 31.

Love and Marriage and New York City follows the lives of four young Jamaicans searching for happiness and fulfillment in Manhattan:- Jessica, a neurotic stockbroker , Theo , an unemployed Banker seeking a fresh start in a new city , Natalie, a hopelessly romantic fashion model pondering her future and Damian, a streetwise photographer hell bent on succeeding at any cost . The play had its World Premiere in Jamaica in September of 1999 and has emerged as Heron’s biggest international success to date, playing to sold out crowds in Jamaica, the USA and Britain over the last four years.

While the show retains its original Director- theatre veteran Norman Rae- Playwright /Actor Heron – playing the role of Damian –is the only member of the original cast returning to Britain for the 2003 tour. The other roles will be enacted by Maylynne Walton (Jessica), Andrew Lawrence (Theo) and Denise Hunt (Natalie).

In the year 2000, the show was nominated for eight International Theatre Institute Actor Boy Awards, including Best Production, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Script. In 2002, an American production of the play- with a new cast except for Heron, enjoyed a successful run at The Paul Robeson Theatre Off Broadway and created history by becoming the first ever Jamaican production to be nominated for the American Black Theatre’s highest honour – the Vivian L. Robinson AUDELCO Award.

The British tour of Love and Marriage follows on the heels of Heron’s latest work Redemption, which recently completed a highly successful six month run in Jamaica and overseas.
