When Aubrey Tanqueray marries his second wife, Paula, he accepts that he must withdraw from London Society for Paula is a woman with a notorious past.

However, the hoped for idyll of a new life in the country does not come to pass.   The couple are ostracised by their respectable neighbours and their relationship becomes intolerably strained leading, perhaps inevitably, to tragedy.

Pinero's play, first performed in 1893, was acclaimed across Europe as the most remarkable English play of the second half of the nineteenth century.
