Best selling romantic fiction novelist Paul Sheldon crashes his car in the mountains of Colorado during a snowstorm.  When he comes to, he is in a remote, dilapidated farmhouse occupied by Annie, his 'Number One Fan'.  Having rescued him from the crash she insists she will nurse him and refuses to tell anyone his whereabouts.

When Annie finds Paul's latest novel and discovers that it does not feature the beautiful heroine, Misery Chastain, she forces him to destroy the manuscript and write another.

A chapter a day and he stays alive!
