Young Philip Pirrip, known as 'Pip', helps the escaped convict Abel Magwitch and, in doing so, sets in motion a train of events that will affect his entire life.
Taken under the wing of the eccentric Miss Haversham, Pip falls in love with her ward, Estella, and begins to dream of life away from the blacksmith's forge where he has been brought up.
When he receives money from an anonymous benefactor, Pip renounces his humble past and travels to London.
